seventeen magazine

Ok, so firstly I apologise for not blogging in forever. I wasn't hectically busy just feeling super lazy and enjoying my holiday.

So most of you know that this holiday I was given the amazing opportunity of interning at Seventeen Magazine and I'm not gonna lie - it was quite cool. I think naturally I just had these super high expectations that no one could ever meet but still I think my experience was worth it.

I was lucky enough to intern Janine Jellars (the editor of Seventeen) and as a bonus I got an extra week of interning compared to the other interns. I met so many amazing girls who I truly consider to be friends now and could not imagine spending my 2 weeks with any other girls.
I think in my head I imagined that it was going to be a total Devil Wears Prada think mixed in with some really young, girly and amazing experiences.

It's really hard trying to explain my experience. I think that like with any experience there was certain things I enjoyed and others I did not.

Things I loved
- my opinion counted. they genuinely cared about what we had to say and took us serious as readers
- the girls I interned with - total beauties
- the kind and friendly faces of the Seventeen Team
- getting to do a photoshoot - not sure if I loved it but I did enjoy it (afterwards)
- doing streetstyle
- going sourcing for outfits
- lunch breaks
- getting to write something which will go into the magazine
- and so much more

Things I didn't enjoy
- the fact that I did not get to be with the person I was interning for the majority of the time. This was simply because they have tiny offices so it would be extremely impractical
- sitting in a separate room with the other interns. I loved the girls but often we felt very excluded
- the limited amount of work we were given

Things I learnt
- Ask as many questions as possible
- if you don't ask for more you won't be given it - this took me a while to realise.I am quite nervous when it comes to people of authority and who I admire so I often find myself in a situation where I am scared to speak up and instead find myself sitting with regret afterwards
- Speak up and be confident
- when meeting new people the best thing is to smile, be friendly and ask lots of questions. The quicker you find similar interests (i.e Baked the Blog) the sooner you'll find yourself with too little time and too much to talk about

There was a point where in all honesty I thought I wasn't enjoying it as much as I thought I would but then the other day on twitter I saw someone bad mouth the magazine - and I took it personally. The thing is I actually love this magazine more than I did before. I know the thorough editing process it goes through and the brainstorming of ideas. I know how critically they look at the magazine and how they aim to create the best possible magazine with what they have. And when I think back none of my stupid complaints really mean anything because as I write this post I am only thinking about the amazing times I had on my 2 week journey as part of the Seventeen Intern Academy

Justin Bieber - 8 May 2013

On the 7th of July 2012 (I had to Google the date) Justin Bieber announced that his Believe tour would be coming to South Africa and in all honesty I don't think anyone was prepared for what was about to hit us.

From the beginning when my younger brother wanted tickets I knew it was going to be a HUGE ordeal. I am not a “Belieber” , although I do like his music, and offered that I would take him. My mom laughed at me when I told her I would need to sleep outside Computicket the night before tickets would be released as she clearly did not know what the Belieber’s were willing to do to get their hands on tickets. Non-the-less I found myself waiting outside a Computicket at 6.30 am and third in line, convinced I was going to get tickets. But sadly I was mistaken, the lady right in front had taken so long to decide which tickets she wanted, aided by the cashier who first bought tickets on her own name AND husband’s name that by the time the lady in front of me (basically second in line) got to the front tickets were sold out. I saw the twitter, BBM and Facebook statuses of upset and angry fans followed by the occasional “I GOT TICKETS TO JUSTIN BIEBER”. I started reading tweets about people getting tickets from Big Concerts and about 2 – 3 hours later I found myself with General Standing tickets to the Justin Bieber show in Cape Town that my mom got online.

Between the months of the show I downloaded the set list so that I could start to learn the words of the songs I did not know and as the day started drawing nearer I got a special T-shirt for my brother and I to wear (Darren, my boyfriend, refused to wear one).

The 8^th of May had finally arrived and with my mom finally realising what a big deal Justin is, she suggested I take the day off varsity to line up for the show. We got to the stadium at about 12 surprised at the already long line. We found a space for ourselves and stood for another few hours, come rain or shine, angry mothers and irritating teenagers singing their hearts out we stood in line getting ready for an amazing experience. We were quite close to the front of the line so when they started letting people in we ran to secure ourselves a space right against the gate that separated Golden Circle from us mere General Standingers. After shoving girls off whole afternoon, fighting for our spaces and trying to protect my baby brother from the savage crowd it was time for the show to begin. It was amazing! The lights, videos, performances, JUSTIN BIEBER !!!! 

It was definitely an experience being a Belieber for a day. Although I could do without the fainting girls and the girls next to me who cried for the entire duration of the show I must say it was a performance not to be missed and I am glad that I can put such an amazing memory in my memory box.

Can't believe its been my 2 year anniversary already ! Here are a few photos of our day out (I had to plan it since he planned it this year). We spent the day at the aquarium, then going for (according to Darren - I don't eat cake) the "yummiest chocolate cupcakes ever" at Charley's bakery and ended our day off with some pizza at Col Cacchios along Camps Bay . perfection <3
