getting winter ready

so while I should be studying for my exams that starts next week I couldn't help myself from doing a post on getting yourself ready for these cold winter months ahead with one of my favourite brands and a new find which is sure to creep into my wardrobe this winter.

Obviously Woolworths would be on my list. I think that they are synonomys with high quality everything and their sleepwear department is definitely my fave. I remember from a young age my mom would always get our sleepwear and things from woolies simply because you knew it would last aswell as it was so pretty. I recently got a new gown there and I am in love with it. I sleep in it everynight and it does more than its job from protecting me from the cold winter nights that are creeping in. Here's a few of my favourite pieces from their website:

All of these items can be found on the woolies website under the label sleepwear and lounge wear. follow the link to go directly to it : woolworths sleepwear and loungewear
The second brand on my blog today will be Sheinside . They are an American based online clothing company with the most gorgeous clothes I've seen in a long time and all of their clothes are up to date with the latest trends and the best part is is that they have free world wide shipping :D. My friend Layla from The ethereal deal told me about this gem. I found these 6 knits that I think are perfect for the chilly winter months and I can't wait to place my order and own some of these pretty pieces:

these pretty goodies range from R250 - R370 which is such a reasonable price for a warm sweater to embrace you through the winter months. These are from my wishlist but form you own and get cracking : Sheinside sweaters
I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did while putting it together. Remember to leave comments about your opinions of the blog and what you'd like to read more about. For updates on the blog be sure to follow me on the following :

students as agents of social change

Have you ever experienced that feeling, that overwhelming feeling of passion and the need o do something, to change something and to be something so much bigger than what you are? I can personally say this is something I feel so often. But for some or other reason we don’t act on this passion and slowly it starts to simmer down and after days, weeks and even months of not acting on this feeling you are left with nothing but a mere memory of what of would’ve , could’ve and should’ve instead of what you did.

This blog post is dedicated to this feeling and why I had this feeling last night. In the beginning of the year every student in Stellenbosch University received an email that encouraged us to apply for a course with the Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert Institute called “Students as Agents of Social Change”. In all honesty I think that most students skimmed the email or did not even take the time to figure out what it was about but because this is where my passion lies and what I love I applied and fortunately was one of 25/26 students chosen to take part in his short course.

Last night was our 4th session and we had an amazing opportunity to meet students from the University of Georgia. We spent the afternoon eating and socialising, getting to know one another and in truth it was the first time I had actually spoken to and gotten to know so many of my fellow “agents”. In the week each agent had to send in a photo that we identified as a problem in today’s society and then speak for 2-3 (inevitably much longer for most) about why it is a problem and what role students play in trying to fix the problem.

We discussed various topics from sustainability, education, land, politics till even imagination. We sat in a room so pumped up, our blood boiling with eagerness to say or do something. To have our opinions’ heard and to go out and change the world. But as one student from Georgia pointed out, and it’s something that is pointed out in every one of our sessions, it’s great that we are able to discuss this and to be so passionate about it but if we don’t act on this passion it says in the room we are in. All it then becomes is a weekly 2.5 hours of passion that disappears into nothing after days, weeks and inevitably months of not acting on our passions.

Whenever I had this feeling of passion, I’d have these huge dreams of what I would accomplish but slowly but surely I would convince myself that I am far too small in this world to create this change that I dream of. But my first step is that I no longer want that passion that I feel to be limited in a room which I why I am sharing it
with each and every one of you reading this post.

I want to encourage you to start speaking about what you are passionate about, even if you are speaking to your friends about it. And don’t think that your passions are in any way inferior to someone else’s. Whether your passion is fashion, music, dancing, politics, economics or any other topic you can think of, your ideas are in no way limited or inferior and ultimately it is up to you to make you passions so much more than a passion that may one day just die down.
I hope you find in yourself the passion and strength to want, create and be so much more than even you think you are capable of

“The world is not interested in what we do for a living. What they are interested in is what we have to offer freely - hope, strength, love and the power to make a difference!” - Sasha Azevedo

A special thanks to the Frederick Van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership, Lloyd Blake, (uncle) Llewlyn MacMaster, my fellow agents and the students from the University of Georgia for an amazingly inspiring and eye-opener of a night

be sure to check out what other courses are running if inerested and apply to as many as you like!

Justin Bieber - 8 May 2013

On the 7th of July 2012 (I had to Google the date) Justin Bieber announced that his Believe tour would be coming to South Africa and in all honesty I don't think anyone was prepared for what was about to hit us.

From the beginning when my younger brother wanted tickets I knew it was going to be a HUGE ordeal. I am not a “Belieber” , although I do like his music, and offered that I would take him. My mom laughed at me when I told her I would need to sleep outside Computicket the night before tickets would be released as she clearly did not know what the Belieber’s were willing to do to get their hands on tickets. Non-the-less I found myself waiting outside a Computicket at 6.30 am and third in line, convinced I was going to get tickets. But sadly I was mistaken, the lady right in front had taken so long to decide which tickets she wanted, aided by the cashier who first bought tickets on her own name AND husband’s name that by the time the lady in front of me (basically second in line) got to the front tickets were sold out. I saw the twitter, BBM and Facebook statuses of upset and angry fans followed by the occasional “I GOT TICKETS TO JUSTIN BIEBER”. I started reading tweets about people getting tickets from Big Concerts and about 2 – 3 hours later I found myself with General Standing tickets to the Justin Bieber show in Cape Town that my mom got online.

Between the months of the show I downloaded the set list so that I could start to learn the words of the songs I did not know and as the day started drawing nearer I got a special T-shirt for my brother and I to wear (Darren, my boyfriend, refused to wear one).

The 8th of May had finally arrived and with my mom finally realising what a big deal Justin is, she suggested I take the day off varsity to line up for the show. We got to the stadium at about 12 surprised at the already long line. We found a space for ourselves and stood for another few hours, come rain or shine, angry mothers and irritating teenagers singing their hearts out we stood in line getting ready for an amazing experience. We were quite close to the front of the line so when they started letting people in we ran to secure ourselves a space right against the gate that separated Golden Circle from us mere General Standingers. After shoving girls off whole afternoon, fighting for our spaces and trying to protect my baby brother from the savage crowd it was time for the show to begin. It was amazing! The lights, videos, performances, JUSTIN BIEBER !!!!

It was definitely an experience being a Belieber for a day. Although I could do without the fainting girls and the girls next to me who cried for the entire duration of the show I must say it was a performance not to be missed and I am glad that I can put such an amazing memory in my memory box.

I posted a few photos on the facebook page so be sure to check them out x

winter skin blues

When I think of winter, before I think of the electric blanket, furry coats or boots I think that along with winter comes terribly dry skin. I'm not sure if I'm the only person who suffers from bad winter skin or whether it's aided by my eczema but all I know is last year my skin got BAD and I decided to prevent that from happening this again this year. I have to put together a plan of action and so far it has worked.

This is my soft skin plan of action for the winter:

This is what you'll need :

1. A tub of aqueous cream (it's really cheap and available at your local pharmacy. Clicks and Dischem stock them too. I paid only R10.50 for a big tub of 500ml at my local pharmacy )
2. Brown sugar
3. Vaseline
4. Face wash (I use the Environ B-active Sebuwash and I really love it. As much as I like to try different products I somehow always find myself being drawn back to this)
5. Face mask (I use the Environ B-active Sebumasque but you can try some DIY masks aswell and try to find a great natural moisturiser)

1. Environ Sebumasque. 2. Environ Face wash 3. AMB Aqua Aqueous cream b.p 4. Vaseline 5. Brown Sugar

This is my weekly routine and hopefully it works for you too:

Mornings:

I wash my face with face wash. Remember to wash with warm water so that it can open your pores and clean out all the dirt it. Then rinse your face with cold water to seal your pores again.
I don't use a toner because my dermatologist told me I shouldn't as it just takes away all of your skin's natural oils.
Finally I just put some aqueous cream on my skin and body. I prefer aqueous cream as my skin is very sensitive and dry. This formula of fragrance and colourant free leaves my skin feeling moisturised and happy

Evenings:

I follow the same procedure for my face
At night I lather vaseline on my skin. I know this sounds weird but trust me it makes your skin feel amazing (I got this tip from Khloe Kardashian from some or other interview). If you don't want that oily feeling on your skin you can just put vaseline on dry patches or skin that requires lots of moisture such as your feet, elbows and knees. I do suggest to only doing this during winter as I can only imagine how sticky you'd feel in pajama shorts and vaseline on your skin.

Once a week:

Use a mask on your skin just to moisturise it and take care of it. I like to put the mask on when I am taking a lovely warm bath as the steam opens your pores allowing the mask to work even better.

Twice a week:

This is my favourite tip and my favourite part of looking after my skin. I like to scrub my skin as it leaves it feeling as soft as a baby's bottom. I got this tip from a friend who studied beauty therapy and with every skin complaint her answer would be "exfoliate". I didn't have an exfoliator at home so I just decided to mix some of my aqueous cream with brown sugar. You don't need to use brown sugar; I just use it because that's what we have in the house. All you need to do is to take a bowl and mix in some brown sugar. I advise you to put in as much sugar as possible as it is a better scrub and works so much better. Just take some of your scrub into your hands and rub it in circles on your skin. You’ll immediate feel the difference once you rinse the scrub off. I advise you to scrub for a bit as the longer you do it the better it works. Just don’t overdo it and bruise your skin or scrub till it’s raw. Remember to moisturise after you scrub as your skin now needs that extra moisture.

I really hope this helps you and takes your of any dry skin problems

Lots of love and have an amazing week
